3 Iconic but Easy-to-Achieve Halloween Hairstyles

Posted by Team John Paul Mitchell Systems® on Sep 27th 2019

Something that shouldn’t be scary? Pulling together the perfect Halloween hairstyle. That’s why we’ve rounded up three quick and easy Halloween hair styles that are anything but spooky.

Pop Star Ponytail

Must-Haves: 1. Flat Iron | 2. Hair Elastics | 3. Hair Spray

Learn how to create a sleek high ponytail worthy of any dangerous woman. (Cat ears and knee-high boots not included.)

  1. Work Awapuhi Wild Ginger® MirrorSmooth® High Gloss Primer into hair and distribute it evenly.
  2. If hair is still damp, grab your Neuro® Dry hair dryer and Neuro Round Brush and dry hair starting at the base. Work your way down to the ends of your hair.
  3. For your sleekest pony, grab your Neuro Smooth flat iron. Divide your hair into sections. Prep hair with Neuro Protect. Then, working with the lower sections first, slowly straighten each section one by one, until hair looks sleek and polished.
  4. Run a generous amount of Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil® evenly through your base.
  5. Divide your hair into two sections, a top and bottom section. The top section should start roughly just below the top of your ear. Brush the top section of your hair back into a high ponytail. Secure it with an elastic at about the top center of your head.
  6. Now, take the bottom section and brush it up to your secured section. Secure the combined sections with a new elastic. Spray generously with Awapuhi Wild Ginger Finishing Spray™, being especially mindful of securing potential flyaways at hairlines.

Bonus: For a look truly fit for a pop starlet, mist your finished style with Awapuhi Wild Ginger Shine Spray™.

Mother of Braids

Must-Haves: 1. Curling Iron | 2. Hair Elastics | 3. Hair Spray

Thankfully it doesn’t require a full army to master a braided hairstyle worthy of a Dragon Queen. While we recommend you put your own twist on this throne-worthy updo, we’re rounding up some basic tips to get you started below.

  1. Apply Invisiblewear® Pump Me Up at your roots. This texture powder will instantly add life and volume to your hair, while also allowing for your braided hairstyle to hold better.
  2. Divide your hair into two sections: a top section and bottom section.
  3. Using the top section of hair, create a crown braid at either side of your head. Starting by your forehead create a standard braid—separating the section into three strands and alternating overlapping outer strands over the middle strand. Optional: For a more polished braid, after you’ve cycled through all three strands, treat the braid like a modified Dutch braid—adding hair to the middle section from the top of your head (only).
  4. Continue until you’ve reached the back of your head and secure with an elastic.
  5. Repeat on the opposite side of your head.
  6. Take the ends of the two crown braids and braid them together in a simple braid.
  7. Customize: Depending on your desired look, repeat this process with the rest of the top section once or twice more, or move ahead to step 8.
  8. Unclip the secured bottom section. Prep hair not in braids with Hot Off The Press® thermal protection spray. Then, grab your Express Ion Unclipped 3-in-1 curling iron and, using the 1” attachment, curl small sections away from your face to create loose, beautiful waves.
  9. Once finished, set your look with a gentle mist of Hold Me Tight™ finishing spray.

Comic Book Cutie

Must-Haves: 1. Curling Iron | 2. Hair Elastics | 3. Hair Spray

Recreate the color-dipped tresses of this iconic villainess with a little help from your squad (read: your salon).

  1. Put aside two small sections of hair from the front of your head, one from the left side and one from the right side.
  2. Prep the rest of your base with Sculpting Foam™. After you’ve worked the product evenly throughout your base, create a center part.
  3. Create pigtails. Gather your hair into two side sections and secure each section high on the side of your head. Secure each section with two elastics for added volume.
  4. Prep the banded sections with Hot Off The Press® thermal protection spray.
  5. Using your Express Ion Unclipped 3-in-1 curling iron with the 1.25” attachment, curl both pigtails, alternating between curling away from the face and towards the face with each section.
  6. Release clipped front sections and curl, if desired.
  7. Spray your curls with Soft Spray®. Once curls have cooled and dried, gently run your fingers through them to soften them.

Bonus: The look isn’t quite complete without this comic book character’s signature hair color. For low commitment, dip-dye ends, ask your stylist about a quick color service using Color Craft or POP XG®.
