And whether she is busy behind her computer screen managing her blog or taking to the streets to snap a shot of her daily look, Melanee exudes the effortless style you’d expect of a lifestyle blogger with 30K+ followers. We asked her to share her style and beauty inspiration and insider tips with us. Here is what she offered:
What inspired you to create your blog?
MS: My blog gives readers a look into my daily outfits, where I incorporate current trends with pieces I adore, both old and new! I like to inspire girls to create outfits on a budget because there are many women out there who treat themselves to designer clothing, rather than regularly shop their racks (myself included!). I want them to know that’s okay. It’s still possible to look amazing, it just takes some creativity. My advice is: Shop affordably, then mix and match your old and new clothes. It works! Occasionally, I like to incorporate posts about events I’m hosting or attended, giveaways, new items that my readers need to try, beauty, travel and food.
Walk us through the process you went through to get your blog to where it is today.
MS: I launched my blog when I was in grad school and needed a creative outlet away from research papers. I also knew I needed a job when I was done and that starting a blog would be a great way to learn new, applicable skills. At the time, I was obsessed with reading blogs but I couldn’t relate to a lot of bloggers because everything they wore was from a designer label. I knew that if I created a blog, I wanted it to cater to women who shopped affordably and that is exactly what my blog has become. It’s still a learning process everyday; I still make mistakes and changes. But to me it’s ok; it’s who I am as a person. I like challenges and it’s important to keep everything fresh and new.
What do you think draws people to your site?
MS: My readers come to my blog for outfit inspiration and the pleasure of viewing pretty pictures. I like to showcase fashion, food and travel since a lot of my followers like lifestyle images. Sharing these types of photos gives them a bigger picture of my life and who I really am.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done as a fashion blogger?
MS: So far I’ve had two amazing experiences as a blogger. I’ve attended NYFW the last few seasons, which has been a dream come true. 5 years ago, I never would have thought I’d be able to attend! Second, I was asked to speak on blogger panels at MAGIC in Vegas as a social media expert. It was fun to speak and share about my knowledge, but at the same time it was very surreal! It was one of my proudest moments.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
MS: I see myself creating my own social media/marketing business. I want to help other businesses create their brand.
How do you define your personal style?
MS: My style will always depend on my mood. I don’t discriminate against any style but I tend to prefer realistic, everyday wear. Denim, tees and boots are my favorite.
What does a typical day in the life of Melanee look like?
MS: Crazy busy! I work in downtown Los Angeles Monday through Friday, and then I’m frequently found shooting outfits after hours for my blog and Instagram. I also love to eat, so you’ll usually find me at a local spot eating my heart away. Or, you’ll definitely see it on my Instagram!
What is your go-to hair and makeup look?
MS: I like simple hair looks that are easy to achieve in the morning, so I often reach for Tea Tree Lemon Sage Thickening Spray® to get volume and then I either flat iron or curl the ends. My makeup routine has been the same for the last few years; as long as I have eyeliner and pink lipstick on, I’m good!
What fashion and beauty trends are you coveting right now? Any tips for getting these styles?
MS: I’ve never been big on trends. I like to wear things I know make me look good. I’ve tried to incorporate new trends into my style, but I’ve noticed those are the looks I’ve often liked least! It’s important for me to stay true to who I am. I do change my hair often; I have experimented with different balayage hair color and I recently cut it to a lob but I didn’t love it. I’ve learned, even if it’s on trend, know yourself and what you like.
What are your favorite Paul Mitchell products? Must-have tools?
MS: I only use Paul Mitchell products! I have very fine, thin hair so all of the thickening products are my favorite. I also just got the Neuro® Unclipped Styling Rod and it’s become my go-to for easy curls.
Do you have any advice for up-and-coming bloggers in the beauty world?
MS: I always give the same advice: Remember to always love yourself and who you are because if you don’t, who will? Don’t change for anyone! Also, market yourself like crazy! No one is going to know who are until you tell them.
