The Buzz on Buzzwords

What does “clean” mean?

Safe for people and the planet, “clean” means that a beauty product should have considered human and environmental health, using a nontoxic element as a baseline and plant-based ingredients for active results.

What is a biodynamic open lab farm?

Biodynamic requires that a farm system itself produce its own fertility—meaning compost and nutrients—as much as possible. Our open-air green research lab in Italy consists of 21 hectares (or 52 acres) of farmland used for the organic farming of plants and allows us to test the best organic ingredients for producing Paul Mitchell® Clean Beauty formulas.

What is bio-based packaging?

Our Clean Beauty innovative bio-based plastic packaging is made from recyclable Green PE, a plastic derived from 90% Brazilian sugarcane*, a renewable raw material.

*This sugarcane is responsibly grown in controlled areas and does not contribute to deforestation.

The Future of Plastic

Our world produces nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year—and our company's part in helping to change that number begins with recycled plastic.

Post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) is material that is made from plastic that has been recycled, cleaned and processed to be re-used. The entire Paul Mitchell® and Tea Tree product lines will be the first of our brands to transition to 75% PCR plastic by 2025. When we reduce our use of virgin, petroleum-based plastic, we can save an estimated 773 metric tons annually!

From packaging design, to material selection, to where our products go after use, we're focused on improving a product’s full life.

Cutting the Carbon

Global warming is catching up to us fast—and it’s up to all of us to do what we can to stop it. Through our company’s efforts now and our goals for the near future, we are on the way to saving over 500 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually!

Photoshoots are very important in our industry—and they can create a lot of waste. Thanks to our partnership with CO2 Cycle, an organization that integrates green principles into productions and events to make them more green, all our photoshoots are carbon neutral! Last year, based on 16 production days, CO2 Cycle’s services helped us:

  • Divert 80% of trash generated on-set to recycling of green waste
  • Offset 39.8 tons of CO2 created during production (travel, hotel stays, shipping of equipment) via carbon offsets
  • Save nearly 1,400 plastic water bottles by using bottle-less water service
  • Use more than 18 kilowatts of solar energy products on set
  • These results are the equivalent of taking 8 cars off the road for a year!
